We left our friends and family in Michigan and drove through beautiful fall colors. We stopped in Ohio and are staying at the Airstream service center. It’s full hookup and only $20 (although it was only $10 two years ago).

Camping World, Georgetown, Kentucky
It was a long travel day! We drove through Ohio (I love driving through Cincinnati) into Kentucky. We are following the same itinerary as we did two years ago when we started our journey. Tonight is night of dry camping in the parking lot of a Camping World.

Walmart, Somerset, Kentucky
We got to our next destination, a Walmart parking lot, in the early afternoon. As we relaxed watching Netflix with our camper parked in a completely unglamorous location, we realized that we were so happy to be back on the road. It cemented our decision to keep traveling in 2026 rather than stopping to build our house.

We arrived at our new hometown – Dunlap, TN! Tim, the owner of the campground where we’re staying at, was as gracious as ever. MacKenzie, Daniel’s daughter, drove down from Chicago to join us for a week.

We went to Clark’s Bakery, which is a vegetarian/vegan bakery out in the middle of nowhere. We got focaccia, cashew cheese, nut and seed bars, and oat pecan cookies. So good!
Next we drove up to our mountain property. The fall colors were breathtaking! This is the first time seeing the cleared pad for our house. We thought we might be sad about the trees that were cleared but we’re just excited to nurture and care for all the nature on our 36 acres. We also walked up to Yellow Cliff, a spot popular with locals which offers great views of the valley.

We went back up to our property and showed MacKenzie other areas. We found a very large spider and later learned that it is a venomous “flying” Joro spider. We showed MacKenzie the spot we found on a cliff just over the property line (we have permission from our neighbor) with views of the valley.

We went to the Coke Oven Museum in Dunlap, TN and had a tour from a very nice man. The coke ovens were started in 1902 and shut down in 1927. There were a total of 268 coke ovens. Coke is coal baked at very high temperatures and is used as the fuel source in the smelting of iron ore and steel making. Other modern day uses include creating gases that produce chemicals like benzene and producing fertilizers using ammonia recovery.
The gentleman even showed us a piece of railroad rail that was donated by a man before he went home and killed his wife. Daniel and I looked at each other because we knew it was the man we bought our property from – Keith. After we found out he shot his wife in their kitchen, we visited his house (it was up for auction) and noticed a lot of train paraphernalia.
